Abstract

ACC111, Accounting Principles I was new to the online format in the Spring of 2017.  This assessment measured student academic performance of those in the online course versus their counterparts in the face-to-face course of the following semester (I did not teach a F2F, 16-week session of this course in S2017).  Scores of the final course grades were compared to notate any difference in academic achievement/mastery.

Results:

ONLINE, 16-Week, SP2017 - the class average of the final score was 82.68%

F2F, 16-Week, F2017 - the class average of the final score was 79.97%

Indicators for future research could include measuring attrition rates as well as academic performance.

Hi Kortney-

Your CATS will provide good baseline information for us to move forward in the online environment with ACC111 (gateway) and other accounting courses. To broaden your comparative sample, I would be excited to use the same exam you use in your online 16 week ACC111 in my face to face ACC111 courses this Spring. Let me know. /CDR

Hello Kortney,

I like Clarissa's suggestion of broadening the sample by utilizing more than one section/instructor in comparing the efficacy of the differing formats/modalities.  I would just suggest that you have experimental and control groups for each instructor/section so that you can compare apples to apples.  Looking forward to your results.

Respectfully,

Tanisha

This is a great idea, Kortney! I am assuming that all quizzes and tests are in the identical format. How are you going to account for the different variables involved such as testing (e.g. in F2F classes, exams are timed and collaboration is restricted) and presentation modalities? That said, I look forward to the results!

Hi Kortney,

This is an interesting study.  I look forward to your results!

Hi Kortney - I just wanted to follow up with this CATS and see how things are going.  Are you finding a difference in the classes now that we are half way through the semester?

The online course is going well, and I have some of EMCC's best and brightest students!  Unfortunately, as it were, I do not have a face-to-face section of this course this semester.  I look forward to closing the loop in the fall.  I lam interested in discovering the results of my comparative study!

Kortney

Examining learning across modalities is so very important.

We can see that with resources and tools, our students can learn in the online environment.

Thank you for sharing.
