Objective: To help students understand the process of determining filing status' for tax payer clients in various given scenarios. Students struggled to determine filing status and the number of exemptions clients may claim.
The purpose is having students to use their personal experience to bring the concept to a situation in which they can relate. It’s my theory that If they can relate personally to the concept, they can better understand how to make the decisions for others. The assignment initially given during Fall 2011 and Fall 2012 (see attached). This assignment was issued again in Fall 2013 after completing this in-class index card exercise.
CONCLUSION: Assignment scores improved from avg of 86%-92% while course grades improved from 84%-92%.

This is awesome, Kortney. As my mentee during the Spring 2013 Adjunct Faculty Mentoring Program, it is great to see you close the loop on this assessment you developed during the program and see students succeed. -Jill Nico

Student learn and retain what they do. Your in-class index card exercise gets them interacting with the data, that otherwise is just words on a page. Great idea!
