What is the Purpose of the Assessment?

One of the goals of the economics program at Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) is to build our students’ critical thinking skills. 

Describe the necessity for this assessment

Less than half of students sampled scored "proficient" or above in Knowledge, Comprehension, and Reasoning.

Describe how the practice will be implemented

Initial results were not satisfactory, so we tried to help by creating a "guide to success" to help students learn how to create a critical thinking response.

Interpret, compare, and describe the results

Students showed marked improvements in "Knowledge" and "Comprehension", but not so in "reasoning".

After analyzing, and reflecting on the outcome, what are the next steps?

We will continue to use the "Guide to Success" in future classes while we re-evaluate the way we teach and assess critical thinking.
