Abstract

Business students have expressed difficulty understanding the accounting rules regarding debits (DRs) and credits (CRs) .  Therefore, during Fall 12, ACC111 class,  one of the honor students to created, for their honors project, a 3 min video presenting the 7 rules of DRs & Crs.   By creating the short video, students would:

a)display their understanding of the 7 rules of DRs & CRs;

b)learn a new skill (e.g. how to create a short and simple video about a comlicated topic);

c) provide a downloadedable learning object for future students to use; and

d) create a formative assessment tool to assess student pre & post video understanding of the 7 rules of DRs & Crs.

The student created the video and presented the vi deo to the class.  The student recieved feedback regarding errors and was asked to update the video to ensure all info is accurate.

The video will be used in Spg 13, in ACC111 class to assist student to understand the 7 rules of DRs & CRs (e.g. formative assessment).

This is a neat idea, Clarissa! For the one student, the metacognition that took place to create the video will permanently embed the lesson with her/him. Getting feedback from the class is also another good idea; not only does it aid the student in revising the video, but they have to process the information in order to help out. It will be interesting to compare student results from your Spring ACC111 students with classes from the past on the same assessment!
