Value of Student Success Fair for CIS 105 and BPC 110

Thursday, February 21, 2019 to Wednesday, February 27, 2019
What is the Need/Assessment?:

Determine if the time out of class to attend the 2019 Student Success Fair for these two classes was valuable to students in relationship to their academic/career goals.

Describe the necessity for this change:

Classroom discussion revealed that most students are not aware of campus resources or of next steps needed for their academic/career goals.

Describe what will be (or was) implemented to affect change:

CIS105 has a module devoted on career exploration, which includes determining education/training requirements. BPC110 does not have a module devoted  to career exploration but the topic is discussed extensively in my class as it relates to technical workplace skills covered in the curriculum. In order to determine if the EMCC Student Success Fair would assist students in their decision making process as it relates to career/academic goals, class time was allotted.

Interpret, compare and describe the results of the change:

A hundred percent of the responses provided on student feedback in these two classes revealed that students learned of valuable campus resources and/or spoke with university representatives to receive assistance for their next steps.

After analyzing the information, what are the next steps?:

Attendance for the Student Success Fair will be required for my students, if the pre-survey reveals students lack knowledge about EMCC resources and need assistance with transition steps into work or higher education.

Abstract:

Time from subject matter in class to attend the 2019 Spring Student Success Fair was worthwhile.

Bridgitte,

I enjoyed reading your CATS.  During the student success fair, I was at the nursing table I was surprised with the number of students stopping by and did not know many of the resources available.  A common one that we take for granted that students know is the library and the resources they have available.  An example of one, is the study guide book for the HESI exam that all students are required to take to enter the nursing program.  Many students did not know there was a study guide for the HESI exam.  Thank you, for sharing.
