In our Introduction to Education course, one of our major topics is ethical behavior by teachers. Materials covered include some reading materials on ethical behavior, the National Education Association teacher ethics, and a voice-over Ppt covering the topic. The follow up assessment is a series of situations, all of which have occurred in local K-12 education settings, to which the students must describe the correct ethical pathway to take. Scores on this assignment averaged at 77%. This was disappointing, especially considering the serious nature of the topic. At the suggestion of a colleague, spurred by other CATS, and in consultation with practicing educators, I created a quick flow-path Ppt titled “Dr. T’s Ethical Decision Making Guide.” Students were required to read/listen to this and do a Discussion regarding a sample ethical situation, before doing the situation assessment. Scores rose dramatically after instituting these steps to an average of 94%.

Pete, I can see why you would be concerned about learning on this specific topic! The powerpoint with your voice is a great tool for the students. It reminds me we sometimes forget to use the voice tool. Thanks for sharing. Olga

Glad to share, Olga! This really made a difference for my students...
Very cool. Thanks for sharing.

Actually, Heather, you created a student guide for a CATS a while back, and that's where I got the idea!
This is a very serious topic that teachers need to know and understand. The PPT was very well done, too. Thanks for sharing.
Because of the serious nature, and prior unacceptable scores, these were my reason for addressing this with a different strategy. Thanks, Becky!
This is a fabulous idea and the students obviously benefited from your new PPT technique. I appreciate you sharing.
This is a great idea! I think of the trainings I've done (for instance training on FERPA) and I always remember best when I have to apply what I've learned to a realistic scenario. It's a great idea to prepare students for these scenarios with your lesson! Thank you for sharing.
