To expose EMCC allied health students to a broader array of allied health degree and certificate transfer programs.
Students often focus on careers in nursing to the exclusion of others.Exposure to non-nursing, health-related programs provide important avenues to healthcertificate/degreeprogram completion.
BIO156 & BIO202 students were asked to complete a pre-health survey. The survey was designed to ascertain their career interests. Based on survey responses, and in collaboration with the Career and Transfer Center an on-campus Pre-Health Fair was organized on 18th September, 2018. After the fair, student attendees were invited to share their feedback on the event
Feedback gathered from Pre- Health Career Fair attendees suggested participants were keen to, and appreciative of, the opportunity to explore allied health career option outside of nursing. Over 130 students participated in the Pre-Health Fair. Polled students expressed satisfaction with the opportunity to explore a variety of allied health related career options.
The allied-health/biology course sequence includes BIO56/181, BIO201, BIO202, and BIO205. A significant portions of students in these courses have the EMCC Nursing Program as their goal. Data have shown that only approximately 10% of pre-nursing students succeed in getting into the highly competitive EMCC nursing program. The fate of the remaining 90% of allied health students is unclear.
In the classroom, biology faculty members routinely observe allied health students focused on nursing careers, often to the exclusion of other allied health careers (careers to which they may be better suited). The goal of this work was to document the career interests of EMCC allied health students, and in collaboration with the EMCC Career and Transfer Center, organize an on-campus Pre-Health Career Fair. The goal of the Pre-Health Fair, to increase awareness of the many allied health certificate and degree programs offered through the Maricopa Community College District and Arizona State University.

Catherine,
This is fantastic! I love how you and Weiru are connecting to students to resources outside of class. This is a fantastic example of co-curricular education. I hope to see you continue to do this for our students.
Thanks Becky!
