What is the Purpose of the Assessment?

There are an abundance of advantages to utilizing a course shell from a prior instructor. However, one disadvantage that exists is the lack of pedagogy from the new instructor.

Describe the necessity for this assessment

Activities with limited participation do not allow for maximum knowledge retention. Students need to DO something to learn.

Describe how the practice will be implemented

In prior lesson, activity provided asked students to read chapter and write five paragraph essay that described what economic system they would prefer. This semester, the students were asked to work together to determine what economic system they would choose after working together on an acivity where they were hypothetically stranded on a deserted island together. This forced them to apply what they had read in a real life scenario. The essay was assigned after this activity.

Interpret, compare, and describe the results

For the competency writing assignment – Economic Systems; students will work in groups to complete the activity “The Island Game” which reinforces the ability to determine the difference between capitalism, socialism, and communism based upon the benefits described and applied to their lives.Class 1 F19 - 23 students average score 23.95/25 points possible average of 95%.Class 1 S20 – 16 students average score of 24.69/25 points possible average of 99%

After analyzing, and reflecting on the outcome, what are the next steps?

I noticed the interaction and dialogue between the students allowed them to reflect on what they had read and retained from chapter reading. Although there were subtle differences in the avg scores from F19 to Sp20. Qualitatively, I noticed more interaction and rich conversations which was a pleasant “side effect” of this activity. Based on this assmnt, I will continue to create and assess more active learning activities into all of my classes."

Abstract

Knowledge retention and transfer are at the core of what we do. It is evident that all students learn in different ways. However, if students are asked to DO something in the process of learning they will not only retain the information but rather be able to comprehend how it is applied to the real world. In addition, as the students start to report out to the class the instructor can listen to the responses and clarify or demonstrate the material to ensure long term retention success.
