MAT082 students historically demonstrate a need for organizational, time management, test-taking and study skills. They also struggle with Math and test anxiety.
In order to address this need, in the Fall of 2014, I requested to teach a AAA learning community with one of my MAT082 courses. The attached results compare my student performance in concurrent MAT082 courses (one with AAA one without). As the data shows, students who are provided with AAA instruction and curriculum have thus far out performed their peers in a traditional MAT082 course. Since many MAT082 students are new to EMCC and the beginning of the semester includes integers and fractions, I chose to focus on the first half of the semester. I will however, continue to monitor the students progress.

This is great to see. We need to see data on whether to continue to offer AAA with MAT082/091 or not. Hopefully we continue to see a positive value with having AAA as part of the curriculum. Thanks Teri!
Great job. Math is such a huge stumbling block for many of our students and I love that you are trying everything you can to help make them more successful. I know that to some instructors the spread of 79% to 83% might not be that significant, but I think in a Math class it is huge! And those are only the mid-semester results. I would imagine that the spread would get larger as the semester progresses. I look forward to seeing further results!

Seems like solid results, Teri! How many students are involved? And, is the AAA class geared towards success in math, or success in college in general? Regardless, it seems to be working!

Approximately 30 students in each course. The AAA curriculum is geared towards success in college in general - study skills, time management, organizational skills, test preparation etc and I added stress management :-)
I just graded their MidTerm Exams and the results are even more "eye opening". The AAA course had an average of 83% while the non-AAA had 76%
Teri, we are discussing this in SAAC; like it a lot, but think you should include what AAA stands for!

Good job Teri, I am glad to see that you recognized the need to incorporate this system to help out in-coming or continuing students with math. I know that if students do not get a good foundation to start out with that catching up can be very difficult and causes students to just drop out. Math is probably one of the more challenging classes for students so kudos for making it as easy as possible to help your students succeed.
This is great data, and so important for math! Hopefully AAA activities can continue to be incorporated into the math curriculum.
