Abstract
This assessment is intended as an alternative to the syllabus quiz. It is primarily for use in online and hybrid courses, but could be used in face-to-face classes that utilize Canvas. Students are required to preview each module of the course in the first week of classes. Students open each module and preview each assignment, activity and due dates within each assignment. Students then write a summary of what is required for each module. This gives students a clear picture of what will be required of them throughout the semester and first hand experience negotiating Canvas. It also works as an effective attendance check for the first week.

Michael - I think this is a very good metacognitive activity, and I agree that this could be a viable alternative to the syllabus quiz. So, did you do this activity this semester? If so, what results did you get as compared to the typical syllbus quiz? And if not, when are you planning on implementing this assessment strategy? That said, I applaud your creativity!
Michael,
This is a fantastic idea to get students to learn about the course and expectations. How did you measure this and compare to previous semesters with the quiz? Thanks for sharing!
