In Fall 2016 SAAC conducted its assessment in Communication, one of 7 general education abilities at EMCC. Data was collected from 57 sections with 1303 students in 2016, compared to 32 sections and 512 students in 2013. The areas assessed in Comm were Physical Delivery (Eye Contact, Facial Expressions, Gestures, Posture, Movement, Audio/Visuals and Preparation) and Vocal Delivery (Language, Pace, Pitch, Articulation, and Pronounciation). See attached Ppt. Results showed the strongest area to be Vocal Delivery, with an average score of 3.16 out of 4. as opposed to Physical Delivery, with an overall average of 2.96. Due to the variability of populations, classes, and the greatly increased numbers of new freshmen, it is not reliable to compare results from 2013 to 2016. However, two significant results were that sophomores outperformed freshmen in every area, and that taking a COM class before or during the same term positively impacted the outcomes. Results were presented at SAAC, Classroom Conversation,LC, and President’s Cabinet in November (see notes). One outcome suggested by SAAC is to include the Comm CATS in future preparation.

I love that you have been able to take assessment practices, and bring them to life with the ideas from our staff and faculty. As a first year faculty, this was a great lesson for me to develop a sense of assessment at macro-level, and to learn the general education abilities positive outcomes from one division to another. Thank you for sharing these here on the CATS website and also with the divisions. This kind of data is so important for student and faculty growth. It will help us identify what is strong in student presentations and what has room for growth. I will be interested to learn more as we continue to analyze, as we discussed in our meeting, does experience presenting in front of audiences help the students' overall scores? One would hope so but it's not always a guarentee so it'd be intersting to find out. Thanks again!
I am really looking forward to seeing data when we can start comparing students that went through CPD and was evaluated on this rubric. Hopefully we can finally get some comparable data.
I can't wait to see the data when CPD starts using the data and perhaps then we will have enough solid data for reapplying for innovations.
