The SLPA program requires observations of therapy in three of our courses. We have struggled for years with students having difficulty getting observations completed in the field due to many issues (observation site schedules, lack of fingerprint card, work schedules, etc). I also struggled professionally with not knowing the quality of the observations seen and whether they were showing them the skills they need to learn as a future SLPA. During this semester, we implemented the use of the "Master Clinician Network" used by many University Speech and Hearing Programs. Instructors can pick observations focused on specific topics, provide feedback on what students are seeing, and ask specific thought provoking questions about the videos. The videos are created at University programs and target a variety of speech language skills. We can now ensure that students are learning techniques and strategies from these observations. Observation summaries are now specific to a video and guide students to think critically about what they see. Compare prior summary and new summary (attached).

Can't wait to see the attachment! Also, if there is enough data for you to make a decision on whether or not to keep using this, then I would say that you closed the loop! That said, I applaud your continuing to search for the best way to provide deep and rich experiences for your students. Sounds like a viable solution to past challenges!

Great idea. Many of our students have outside commitments that may cause them to miss an observation so this solves that problem. This is also a great way to determine if the students are learning a particular concept. It appears that if they are weak in one partcular area then you can assign them a second video on the same topic to assess their learning.Well done.
