Assessing the Trigonometry Hybrid "Getting Started" Module

Abstract

The beginning of the course is dedicated to helping students become familiar with the Canvas system, and the specific requirements for submitting online assignments for the class. The requirements for submitting online assignments for this class may be different from other online classes students have had. Especially since MyMathLab isn’t used. In-class and out-of-class practice will prepare students to submit online assignments and check their grade. An online survey (quiz) will measure if students "understand" the Getting Started assignments. The survey asks students to “check” the competencies they understood before the module, and to “check” the competencies they understood after the module. A text box allows students to include any questions for the instructor.

Hi Steve, I will be looking forward to seeing your results.  Is there some way for you (the instructor) to verify if the students have actually learned the getting started assignments, or is this just measuring their subjective impression if they understand how to do it?  Do you predict that there will be some areas where students will not be particularly proficient in before the getting started assignment?  I will be interested to see which areas show the greatest "value added" for students.

I too look forward to your results. I believe they will be predictable, and positively so. Do you have prior data (where you didn't take these measures) to compare to? That would make for interesting information, and could well prove your point.

Steve - happy to see you on here :-)  There are still many students who are not confident with technology and the Canvas system so the "Getting Started" is definitely a beneficial concept to implement.  I am beginning to use more OER in my classrooms and this concept will be very beneficial to me.  I also look forward to more feedback from you and your students around this process.

HI Steve, The pre and post on the modules will be an interesting way to see what they have learned. I look forward to your results. Thanks, Olga
