What is the Purpose of the Assessment?

The purpose of this assessment was to systematically capture reflections from Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) Student Affairs professionals who attended the 2025 Arizona Transfer Summit, to evaluate how participation challenged thinking, deepened understanding of the student transfer experience, identified systemic barriers, and inspired actionable initiatives. The reflections were expected to inform strategic improvements to EMCC’s transfer-related services and strengthen institutional collaboration in support of student success.

Describe the necessity for this assessment

As part of our ongoing commitment to student success, it is critical to continuously evaluate, enhance, and innovate the transfer experience at Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC). Transfer remains a high priority for our student population. According to the EMCC 2020–2024 Impact Report (p. 5), “46% of our 2023–2024 students intend to transfer to a university”. This statistic underscores our institutional responsibility to actively address systemic barriers, strengthen inter-institutional collaboration, and implement strategic solutions that support student transfer pathways. EMCC participates in the Ruffalo Noel-Levitz (RNL) Student Satisfaction Inventory (SSI), which is conducted every three years. The survey assessment of student satisfaction uses a two-pronged approach. Each item is scored by participants on its importance and satisfaction. Opportunities for improvement are defined as of high importance and low satisfaction. EMCC completed its Spring 2025 RNL assessment, and according to the Ruffalo Noel Levitz SSI Exec Summary (p. 2-3), two opportunities for improvement were identified: 1) “My academic advisor is knowledgeable about the transfer requirements of other schools” and 2) “My academic advisor is knowledgeable about my program requirements”. This work supports an institutional approach to improving student satisfaction.

The Arizona Transfer Summit serves as a valuable forum for professional dialogue, networking, and knowledge-sharing. However, there has historically been no formal process to systematically capture how participation in the Summit challenges professional thinking, deepens understanding of the transfer experience, drives new initiatives, and expands professional networks. At EMCC, key areas that directly influence the transfer student experience include Academic Advising, the Career and Transfer Center, and the Welcome Center. To strengthen these efforts, the following Student Affairs professionals from those areas attended the 2025 Arizona Transfer Summit in April: Rich Givens, Bryan Hernandez, Emmanuel “Manny” Landis, Stephen Zubia, Miyah Gaston, Daniel Meador, and Isaac Torres.

Describe how the practice will be implemented

The Dean of Student Affairs, Retention, implemented a structured reflection process for attendees. Each participant in the 2025 Arizona Transfer Summit completed a comprehensive survey focused on key areas such as leadership development, systemic challenges, potential initiatives, and collaboration opportunities. The survey was designed to capture participants' insights. The responses were analyzed to identify common themes, shifts in thinking, and emerging trends. Additionally, insights from the reflections were expected inform future conference participation, guide internal initiatives, and support the development of targeted programs that enhance the student transfer experience.

Interpret, compare, and describe the results

A structured reflection process and timeline following the 2025 Arizona Transfer Summit was established to provide critical insights into leadership development, systemic challenges, potential initiatives for consideration, and collaboration opportunities. After attendees completed the structured survey, responses were analyzed to identify common themes, shifts in thinking, and emerging trends.

  • Survey Completion (May 2025)
    • All attendees completed a structured reflection survey. The survey captured insights on leadership development, systemic barriers, potential initiatives, and opportunities for collaboration. The feedback was designed to provide an initial snapshot of the key takeaways from the 2025 Summit.
  • Summary and Synthesis of Responses (Summer 2025)
    • Survey responses were analyzed to identify common themes, emerging trends, and shifts in perspectives on the student transfer experience, with a focus on actionable insights to inform EMCC’s strategies. The synthesized 2025 AZTransfer Summit reflections were shared with the 2025 Summit team, followed by collaborative discussions to translate these insights into strategic initiatives aimed at improving transfer completion and the overall student transfer experience.
  • Strategic Planning and Continuous Improvement (July-December 2025):
    • Identify potential initiatives to improve the transfer experience. Considerations would focus on strengthening current services and aligning future projects with statewide trends and priorities. The goal would be to ensure that transfer pathways are optimized for student success and to submit a formal presentation proposal for consideration at the 2026 AzTransfer Summit.
After analyzing, and reflecting on the outcome, what are the next steps?

While the intent was to use the structured survey to identify potential initiatives and advance a formal proposal, it became clear that the effort would be strengthened by gathering additional feedback and expanding participation. Broadening the team and incorporating insights from subsequent Summit reflections would provide a more comprehensive perspective, enabling more informed, scalable, and impactful recommendations to guide future improvements to the transfer experience.

Abstract

The transfer experience at Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) remains a strategic priority, with 46% of 2023–2024 students indicating an intent to transfer (EMCC 2020–2024 Impact Report, p. 5). This underscores the need for continuous learning, collaboration, and innovation that strengthen the transfer pathway. EMCC also participates in the Ruffalo Noel-Levitz (RNL) Student Satisfaction Inventory (SSI) every three years. The SSI measures both importance and satisfaction, highlighting areas where high importance and low satisfaction signal a need for improvement. In Spring 2025, two opportunities emerged: students’ perceptions of advisors’ knowledge about transfer requirements and program requirements. This aligns directly with EMCC’s institutional focus on improving student satisfaction and strengthening the quality of advising.

The 2025 Arizona Transfer Summit provided EMCC Student Affairs professionals an opportunity to engage in statewide dialogue, expand networks, and explore practices that support student success. While the initial goal was to identify initiatives and advance a formal proposal, it became clear that the work would be strengthened through broader participation and additional feedback. In response to the lack of a formal reflection process, the Dean of Student Affairs, Retention, implemented a structured survey to capture attendee insights. Analysis of these responses identified key themes and informed the decision to send an expanded team to the 2026 Arizona Transfer Summit, supporting more informed recommendations to strengthen EMCC’s student transfer experience.
