Abstract

The fall 2016 Assessment Happens was held August 18 in the CTL. A record number of 61 faculty and administration signed in, with 57 filling out evaluations (also a record high). On a 5 point scale, the ratings were all in the 4 - 5 point range, with a high of 4.72 for the CATS of the Month Share Out and a low of 4.36 for the CATS Differentiated Workshop. Based on that and the responses to "What did you like most," it is clear that faculty most highly value learning from their peers (the "Down and Dirty Cooperative Learning Strategies" was second highest with a 4.58).  Suggestions for improvement were strongest with regards to the Cats Workshop, and centered around either that there wasn't enough time, or having lunch during that time was highly distractive.  Lessons learned: keep the CATS of the Month share out, use faculty peers for the assessment/pedagogy portion, repeat the SAAC Olympics game with more challenging questions, and have the workshop before lunch with a more dedicated focus. The survey results will be shared with SAAC members at the next meeting, with their suggestions to be added. See attached Analysis Report.

One take away is that we did the evaluation too soon.  We had people turn them in before the breakout sessions.  As one of the feeback items says, breakout was during lunch, so a lot of people chit chatted and didn't really participate in the breakout session.  We will definitely make adjustments for Spring.

I really enjoyed this session and thought the group on cooperative learning did a fantastic job :-)

I agree with the feedback above...

1)  I would make sure to remind participants about the feedback forms and signing in because quit a few were coming and going as the session unfolded

2) I was looking foward to the breakout sessions but as soon as lunch happened we all started socializing and then time was over.

Great job Pete and Becky and a wonderful way to start the semester!

It was a very good meeting. I am wondering if adjunct faculty were invited to the fall 2016 meeting. I recall that some previous Assessment Happens meetings included an adjunct faculty invitation. I noticed that some of those being acknowledged for participating in a general education assessment were adjunct faculty. I think if we want to expand adjunct faculty participation we should make special efforts to include adjuncts at official SAAC events.
