Team Collaboration in Discussion Boards

Abstract

This is an online course with an emphasis on learning the principles of supervisory management in an organizational setting. The method of instruction and level of learning will be measured by the quality of the student’s responses on the Discussion Boards and their application of the principles of management. 

Three different types of Discussion Boards have been developed for the students to interact in teams and/or as part of a class collaboration to complete all course assignments. The first type of Discussion Board requires each student to respond to the end of Chapter Discussion Questions. Each student’s response should be non-repetitive, thought provoking, and self-reflective based on their personal experiences whenever possible. Second, the Video Reflection Discussion Board has similar grading criteria, but requires the students to post their responses on Canvas in the form of an audio/video presentation to the class.  Third, Learning Team Assignment Discussion Board also has similar grading criteria to the other two types of Discussion Boards, but the assignment is based on case studies.

I would enjoy more information around the rubric you use to assess these discussion boards.  I am beginning to use them in my courses - more for introductions and "questioning" but am open to more creative ideas and feel your rubric might help me in that process :-)

Is this the first time you have taught this course?  If not, what did you do in the past?  If so, if it doesn't go as you would like, do you already have ideas for what to try next time?  I hope the different discussion boards go well.  Good luck!

I have taught this course in the past, however, this will be time teaching the course online. Yes, I already have course improvement ideas, but they are technology based and will consist primarily of real time conferencing.

Thanks for sharing these various Discussions! You clearly have your students actively engaged. Do you have a rubric for students to follow and you to assess with? For example, how do you measure "thought provoking"? If you do have one, please share!

Hi Pete,

Thank you for the compliment. Please see the attached rubric which outlines the method used to measure each student's "thought provoking" responses related to supervisory managment. Basically, the quality of each student's responses will be measured by the relation of their individual connection (application) to outside experiences, reading assignments, and class discussions pertaining the concepts of supervisory management.

Thank you for your feedback. This particular online course will be piloted in Summer 2015. The level of student participation will certainly be an accurate measement of the effectiveness of the course design.

I really like the rubric that you used for this.  I like the focus on a combination of application to outside experiences, reading assignments, and class discussions.

Love the Grading Rubric for Online Discussion Board!  I think the rubric would work well with the discussion boards in my classes. Can't wait to read the results. Great job on the MGT101 rubric.
