In the Fall of 2016, I decided to convert some of the many writing assignments in my online and hybrid CRE101 course to video submissions rather than written submissions. Unfortunately, at the time, the recording tool in Canvas was unpredictable and made it very difficult for many students to successfully submit their video submissions. Submitting by attaching video files was also problematic due to the increased time it took for the students to upload the files and the time for me to download them to grade. It was so problematic that many students either contacted me about not being able to upload their video or they simply did not do the video assignments. It was a huge source of frustration for both teacher and student. Not wanting to abandon video submissions, I searched for a solution. In Fall of 2017, I removed the Canvas recording and file attachment option for submission and began requiring students to submit their video submissions via their student YouTube account. Reports of tech issues decreased, and successful submissions increased significantly. See attachments for background info and data.

Hi Heather, Thank you for sharing this. I, too, have had frustrated students with the video reflections in my courses. The Youtube option is a great solution in additon to the advantages that you mention in your CATS. I think it is also a nice portfolio for the students to have in their account to remember what they learned in the course. Once they finish our courses, they don't have the Canvas videos created with the Canvas tool. They have a record of their youtube videos in their account and can reflect and/or share.
